Are you an aspiring entrepreneur, artist, or designer looking to monetize your creativity? Then we’ve got something for you!
A Print on Demand (POD) business might be the perfect avenue for you. It’s a revolutionary way to sell your product without the hefty upfront costs and inventory headaches associated with traditional retail. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll walk you through every step of setting up your very own POD business – from understanding the startup costs to insider tips and tricks to optimize your operations. Let’s turn your creative passion into a profitable venture, shall we?
First of all I am running a POD business myself at the time. It’s a great way of more or less “passive” income. Now we all know that there is no really passive income, but once you set everything up and start to make some money, you can reinvest your revenue in paid ads, which will significantly decrease the amount of work you have to do. We’re currently running paid meta ads, which means we produce one reel/story per day and pay to let it go viral easily, from that point on it’s really just a piece of cake.
What even is Print on Demand (POD)?
Print on Demand (POD) is a digital business model where you can sell custom designs on various products, but only produce and ship them once an order is placed. You create the designs, upload them onto a POD platform, and they handle the printing, packaging, and shipping when a customer orders your product. This way, you don’t have to carry any inventory, invest in printing equipment, or handle shipping, making it a cost-effective and low-risk option for artists and entrepreneurs.
What do you need to start?
First of all it makes things way easier to have a registered business. Of course, you can work your way around that, but that’s a real pain in the ass. You can get to the finished store without a registered business, but as soon as it comes to payment processing it becomes difficult.
Note that for legal purposes we don’t recommend doing this without a registered business.
You only need two things to start:
- Online shop
- Printify account
Now, let’s look at the startup costs:
The only thing you need to start, which isn’t free, is a online store. We recommend you get yourself the shopify starter package which is only $1 for the first three months and afterword’s $5 per month.
It doesn’t include a few features that could really help, but you can easily upgrade your plan once you start making some money. The best part is that even if you don’t get a single sale in the first three months, you’ve only lost $3.
The printify account is free and for advertising you can always use social media, which is free.

That’s all you need to start.
How to set everything up
First of all head over to printify.com and create a free account.
Then head over to shopfiy.com, create a account and buy the ‘starter’ plan for $1 for the first three months (afterwords $5 per month, which means that in order to make profit you need to approximately sell 1 product every month.
If you can’t find the $5 plan, just scroll down. It’s hidden pretty well.
Create your first online store, don’t fill it with anything.
Now head back to printify and connect printify to your shopify account.
A few tipps and tricks
Now it’s time to think about what product you want to sell.
Let’s say you want to sell teacups. Just select the one you like to most on printify and start designing.
Either design in printify or create a free account on ‘canva.com’ and design there.
You can also use stock footage which normally wouldn’t be free by just paying a $0.99 fee for every sale you make. That makes designing a lot easier and you get great designs without paying upfront.
A life hack here is to head over to pinterest or really just any social media platform and just copy a few of the trending designs. Or of course make your own. Now simply finish your product and set a price. It’s important to set a realistic price, make sure you are in the same price range as your competitors are.
From here you can just click save and it will upload your product to your shopify store.
If anyone orders your product, shopify will take a part of the money your customer paid and send it to printify.
They will print your product and ship it to your customer. You don’t have to do anything, but you get to keep whatever the difference of the price to produce your product and your retail price is.
We recommend you put a few products into your store.
You can also add tags to your products in printify. This is useful because your online store has a search bar. But this feature, along with many others, is self-explanatory. You will get walked through all the steps and options by printify.
Now you only need to set up payment processing, which is easy if you have a registered business.
(Shopify will walk you through the process)
As you see, these two platforms are really self-explanatory so you can really do it all on your own.
From here on you can just promote your product and start to make money.
